Day 13 -- Nice

Tuesday, 19 September 2023

Another day with no rugby match. I walked down to the shore and dipped my feet in the Mediterranean Sea. The beach is made up of pebbles instead of sand. They range from pea-sized to baseball-sized. It was not easy to walk on it barefoot.

Then over to Big Fernand for lunch. Had a fantastic burger and fries. The burger didn't photograph well, but it was delicious.

While walking back toward the hotel, I read a news article that mentioned that William Webb Ellis was buried in France. In the town of Menton. I looked it up, and it's only about 5 km east of Monaco, and I already knew that Monaco's only 15 km east of Nice. I activated a day on my Eurail Pass and headed to the train station.

While standing on the platform I started loading up the walking directions from the Menton train station to the Menton cemetery in Google Maps. Google pointed out that the cemetery would be closed by the time I got there. Oops. Because I had already committed to a day of travel on the Eurail Pass, and because I was already on the train platform, and because I only made it into the top 30 on City Strides with my Monaco walk yesterday, I figured I'd go to Monaco and walk around some more.

This time I walked from the water's edge at the harbor to the highest point in Monaco. Sea level to 161 meters.

No monument, but this is the highest point in Monaco

After today's walk I've finished 31.24% of the streets in Monaco and I'm in the top ten

I forgot mention yesterday that while walking in Monaco I went right past an Asics store. My shoes are getting pretty beat up -- they were on their last miles even before this trip -- so I stopped in to the store and bought a new pair. I asked them if I could wear the new ones out the door, and if they could toss the old ones in the trash. They agreed. These new ones -- Cumulus 25 -- should easily last the rest of the trip, and then some.

Then back to Nice to end the day.
